Computer virus is actually a computer program code which copies itself to other files or computers. This virus will spread and sometimes cause undesirable stops, system hangs, performance degrades and etc.etc. Some virus even corupts or deletes part of files or files. Mainly the virus will spread so that they won't be easily eliminated.
TSR(terminate-and-stay-resident) virus are virusses which only is active when file containing virus is run/loaded.
Another type of virus is the MBR virus. These virusses will infect the Master Boot Record of your Hard Disk Drive. Everytime you boot up your computer, the computer will automatically read the MBR of the HDD. This means that everytime you boot up your computer, the virus will stay resident in your computer memory.
Some will even encrypts itself so that removing the virus would mean an encrypted master boot record which will make all data on the HDD unreadable. With new advanced Anti-Virus software, it will decrypt the MBR and remove the program code in the MBR which is the virus.
Stealth virus is virusses which hides itself in the memory and prevents it's detection. It will hide itself in the memory by making the anti-virus software think of it as a normal program. These type of virusses is undetectable when loaded. The computer must be booted up clean before virus can be detected and removed.
It is recommended to update your anti-virus software virus definitions at least every month to protect your computer from virusses. Download files from the internet only from trusted sites like Microsoft, Netscape and other developed companies.
